Why should you care about what is happening at BGCWV?
“The children are the future.” We have all heard this phrase before and it continues to be true! Our
BGCWV children are the future of the West San Fernando Valley.
As I celebrate my one-year anniversary with the Club, I am excited as I reflect on our past, our present, and most of all our future.
I, the Board of Directors, staff, and members throughout BGCWV are profoundly grateful to
MacKenzie Scott for the incredible investment that she made in us this month. There are 4,700 Clubs
across the United States, and BGCWV was one of 62 Clubs selected to receive a portion of a $281 Million gift made to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one of the largest individual donations in the
organization’s 160-year history.
This June, BGCWV will celebrate its 30 th Anniversary. We had founding members who were visionaries – they had a vision for the West San Fernando community and how it would eventually look and feel. They had an idea as to the opportunities it would have for the next generation and through the diligent work of many individuals, BGCWV has been staying true to the future they envisioned.
We have enabled and inspired countless young people throughout the years by providing afterschool
programming and care. The COVID pandemic tested our organization like so many other community-
based organizations and businesses throughout the Valley. Our BGCWV staff pivoted to provide online
services and ensure the most vulnerable would have a safe environment to connect for their classes
when LAUSD went virtual. We provided thousands of meals to our community members who were
suffering. We hosted vaccine clinics to ensure our members and their families would have access to
health. We stood in the gap when LAUSD reopened its doors to in-person teaching last spring. You could have found us serving on eleven campuses throughout the West San Fernando Valley, all while we continued to provide internet access for families not ready to have their kids go back to in-person
teaching. Last summer we hosted five summer camp locations, the first time in our history to serve
families and kids in a variety of locations for the summer. By the time December 31, 2021, came around, we had served over 2,500 unique kids and teens.
Our team is authentic in living our mission and values every day. These are just a few of the reasons whyBGCWV was selected by MacKenzie Scott as a recipient of this life-changing gift to our organization.
BGCWV will continue to provide diverse programs within our five core areas. We will continue to
measure our impact. We will stand in the gap for our young people to ensure they reach their full
potential. We will support our teachers by helping their students who struggle academically,
emotionally, or physically, to ensure they can graduate on time and be Future Ready.
Our children are our future. Their perceptions matter and at BGCWV we give them a voice and we help them to know how to use their voice for the betterment of themselves, others, and their community.
