Cooper Literacy
PROGRAM
Encouraging the love of books and the enjoyment of reading among children!

At the Club, more than half of our members come from families where English is not their first language. With this in mind, we have established the BGCWV Cooper Literacy Program, a comprehensive approach to helping children of the West Valley, ages 6-17, become proficient in reading and seeing reading as a tool to a better life and an enjoyable pastime.
The BGCWV Cooper Literacy Program is the Club’s umbrella literacy program, providing Club members a wide range of programs and activities, including the Cooper Reading Challenge in the fall.
Created in 2007, the Cooper Reading Challenge is an annual event that encourages kids to read books and write reviews to qualify to receive $25 to purchase books at Barnes & Noble in Calabasas.
When kids select their own books, they’re more likely to read and enjoy them.
Funds for the program come from community supporters who donate $25 for each child they wish to sponsor.
So far, 3,242 children have selected books for themselves and their families.

In 2023, Martin & Barbara Cooper are inviting you to help expand this to a year round literacy program — the Cooper Literacy Program.

Support the Cooper Literacy Program

The mission of the Cooper Literacy Program is to encourage reading for enjoyment and learning among the members of Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley and to teach them to value and to use books as part of a well-rounded life.
The goal of the Cooper Literacy Program is to promote a love of reading and books as well as improve reading ability by providing young people with age-appropriate reading activities.
The program creates an opportunity for San Fernando Valley business and civic leadership to support literacy among young people.
